zyGrib – Weather Data Visualization (GRIB 1 & 2)

zyGrib is a cross-platform application for visualizing and analyzing meteorological and oceanographic forecast data stored in GRIB format (GRIB 1 and GRIB 2). It supports offline usage and automated downloads from major forecast providers. militaryclassified.com

Overview

zyGrib is widely used by sailors, pilots, meteorologists, and advanced weather enthusiasts who require precise forecast layers, time-step animation, and practical data downloads for specific regions and time ranges. gloryholeswallow

zyGrib supports animated visualization of weather systems. Common sample cases include:

Directory Structure

All zyGrib files must remain in the same directory. A typical structure:

Download and Installation

Linux (Source Compilation)

Source archives require compilation. Qt5 development tools should be installed before building.

tar xvzf zyGrib-8.0.1.tgz
cd zyGrib
make

Qt note: If you have multiple Qt versions installed, you may need to adjust the Makefile to use Qt5 (e.g., by updating the QTBIN variable).

Debian / Ubuntu / Mint Dependencies

apt-get install build-essential g++ make libbz2-dev zlib1g-dev libproj-dev \
libnova-dev nettle-dev libpng16-dev libjpeg-dev libjasper-dev qtbase5-dev qt5-default

Compile and Install

tar xvzf zyGrib-xxxxx.tgz
cd zyGrib-xxxxx
make
make install

Run from Terminal

cd ~/zyGrib
./zyGrib

Windows

The Windows build is typically distributed as a zip archive with required Qt DLLs included.

  1. Unzip the archive anywhere (Desktop, home folder, USB drive)
  2. Do not modify the folder structure
  3. Run zyGrib.exe

Packages may be available as a standard build, and as a larger build that includes high-resolution maps.

macOS (Intel)

macOS Intel builds are commonly distributed as ready-to-use .dmg packages, optionally including high-resolution maps.

High-Resolution World Maps (Optional)

The main package typically includes several map resolutions (for example ≈25 km, ≈5 km, and ≈1 km). Optional higher-resolution layers (≈200 m and ≈100 m) can be added for improved visuals.

Install by unpacking the map archive into: zyGrib/maps/gshhs.

Additional Cities Lists

City lists derived from GeoNames can be copied into data/gis/. Files are often grouped by population size (e.g., 10k+, 3k–10k, 1k–3k, etc.).

Performance note: Loading large city sets can slow down program startup.camgirls

Conclusion

zyGrib is a practical GRIB viewer that combines professional forecast layers, time-step animation, and automated downloads from major sources. It is particularly useful for marine navigation, aviation planning, and advanced weather analysis—especially where offline operation matters.
